In an article in the New York Times Chief White House Strategist Steve Bannon comments that Donald Trump was elected by a surge of support from “the working-class hobbits and deplorables.”
However upon reading the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R Tolkien, we find that the hobbits are a farming society. There may be a few business owners like the miller or the innkeeper who hire workers, but the majority of hobbits work in an agricultural setting.
It is also interesting to note that at the end of the Lord of the Rings, the home of the hobbits, the Shire is taken over by a small group that lied and schemed to take power, and have built a wall to keep foreigners out. They also changed the Shire into an industrial state from an agrarian society, that left the land a wasteland and the country a virtual police state.
There is no confirmation that Steve Bannon has read the Hobbit, or the Lord of the Rings books.
