Republican Senator Rand Paul has come out in opposition to the new healthcare plan that House Republicans have brought forward. He was asked by Bloomberg news, “(With) you coming out against it, some of your colleagues already coming out against the House Republican plan, is this proposal dead?” Paul replied, “Yes, it is dead on arrival.”
President Trump stated he liked the plan. During his meeting with Representative Steve Scalise and the U.S. House Deputy Whip team, Trump stated, “This will be a plan where you can choose your doctor. This will be a plan where you can choose your plan. And you know what the plan is — this is the plan.”
In a meeting with Republican House members, Trump warned them that it would be an electoral “bloodbath” for them if the repeal and replace of Obamacare does not go through.
At the March 8th daily press briefing, Sean Spicer was asked if the Republicans could sympathize with the people who would lose their health care under the new plan. One reporter asked, “The individuals involved in the healthcare situation right now… can they really have the kind of sympathy and empathy for individuals who may not benefit nearly as much when they are negotiating all these plans?” Spicer replied “In what respect?” The reporter clarified, “Well I mean, you’re fine, you’re covered.” Spicer replied again, “First of all I’m not fine…. That’s like saying because I have a job, I can’t be sympathetic to somebody who doesn’t have a job.”
Spicer laid out how the plan would appeal to 18-35 year olds; “27, 28 year old individuals don’t need care that’s for folks, y’know, that talks about certain things, that a plan that has certain things, that are towards the end of life.”
The AARP has announced on their website that the organization will be opposing the healthcare bill.
