President Donald Trump released his ‘hard power budget’ last week that increases defense spending by $54 billion, but makes cuts to spending at the State Department and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA’s budget would be slashed by 31 percent. 62 other agencies and programs will be completely eliminated under the budget, including the Corporation for Public Broadcasting which funds the PBS television network, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which fights invasive species like the sea lamprey, could see its funding slashed by 97 percent. Meals on Wheels could taking a funding hit in the Trump budget as well.
White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney stating that cutting Meals on Wheels is compassionate saying, “I think it is one of the most compassionate things we can do… You’re only focusing on half the equation right? You’re focusing on recipients of the money. We’re trying to focus on both the recipients of the money and the folks that give us the money in the first place.” Mulvaney also stated that Meals on Wheels failed to meet their objectives. As well Mulvaney defended the cuts to after-school programs explaining, “They’re supposed to be educational programs right? That’s what they’re supposed to do, they’re supposed to help kids… who don’t get fed at home, get fed so they do better in school. Guess what? There’s no demonstrable evidence they’re actually doing that. There’s no demonstrable evidence (of) actually helping results, helping kids do better in school.” He continued, “I think it’s fairly compassionate to go to them and say, ‘Look, we’re not going to ask you for your hard-earned money anymore, single mom of two in Detroit.’ Okay?”
